How Often Should You Get Your Hair Cut? A Simple Guide

It is one of the most common questions we hear: how often should I actually be getting my hair cut? The honest answer is that it depends on your hair, your style, and your goals. Here is a simple guide to help you work out what is right for you.

Short cuts and styles: every 4 to 6 weeks

If you have a short or precise cut, it will lose its shape fastest. Pixie cuts, bobs, and sharp styles rely on clean lines, so a trim every four to six weeks keeps them looking intentional rather than grown out. If you have a fade or a defined neckline, you may want to visit even more often to keep it crisp.

Medium-length hair: every 6 to 8 weeks

Medium styles offer a bit more flexibility. A trim every six to eight weeks helps maintain your shape, removes split ends, and keeps everything looking healthy without losing much length. This is the sweet spot for a lot of people.

Long hair: every 8 to 12 weeks

If you are growing your hair or simply prefer it long, you do not need to visit as often. A tidy every eight to twelve weeks keeps the ends healthy and prevents split ends from travelling up the hair shaft, which can actually help your hair look longer and fuller over time.

If you are growing your hair out

It sounds counterintuitive, but regular small trims help when you are growing your hair. Removing damaged ends keeps your hair strong and reduces breakage, so more of the length you grow actually stays. Talk to your stylist about a light "dusting" that maintains length while keeping the ends in good shape.

Coloured or chemically treated hair

Colour, bleach, and other treatments can leave ends more prone to dryness and splitting. If your hair is coloured, more frequent trims help keep it looking fresh and healthy, and regular appointments also let your stylist keep your colour looking its best.

Signs it is time for a trim

Not sure whether you are due? Look out for these:

  • Split or frayed ends
  • Your style no longer sitting the way it used to
  • More tangles and knots than usual
  • Hair that feels dry or straw-like at the ends

The simplest rule of all

If in doubt, ask your stylist. Everyone's hair is different, and the best schedule is one built around your hair type, your lifestyle, and how you like to wear it. At your next appointment, we are always happy to recommend a routine that works for you.
